Skype is Shutting Down: What you need to know?

After 22 years and around 2 decades skype shut down on Monday 5 May 2025. The founder of the platform is Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, they founded it  in 2003, began as a service offering phone calls and connected the people across the globe over the internet.

Microsoft the parent company of the platform recently announced in February that we’ll shut down skype. Users can now join the Microsoft teams which is the replacement of skype, users of skype can log into Microsoft Teams with their skype login id’s after that all the data will  transferred automatically except private chats and bot data.

The closure affects the free and paid both users the skype business users data will be transferred into Microsoft Teams, this platform offers many same feature and much more.

Why Skype shut down?

The great rise that Microsoft integrate the skype with their platform like windows, smartphones and xbox . Once they claimed that they reached 1 billion users. But frequent  changes in interface and updates made it bad. After the COVID -19 there are some more competitors like the zoom ,slack ,webx and discord was the final death knell for the .

In 2025 the platform will continuously losing their users and they only have around 23 million monthly users which is lesser than 150 million monthly users in 2011, which is also very lesser than the 400 millions users which they claimed.
